How to Work Part-Time

Expect 1000 yen / hour. You can work up to 28 hours a week on a student visa. The better your Japanese, the more jobs will be available to you. Some businesses won’t hire foreigners, it’s Japan, so don’t get upset. Your school, or other students, will help you find a part time job. Working for cash is illegal, but many students do it out of necessity. Some restaurants and bars will pay you cash… just ask them during the interview. Tell no one.

Working Online

Expect $10 / hour. I recommend teaching English on Preply. Two of my friends are doing it, it’s easy work, and you don’t need to know Japanese. You can work unlimited hours online, but not for for a Japanese company. Also, your online income (paycheck) can’t go directly into your Japanese bank account.

TIP: It’s best to not talk about your online work / income. Working online is not common in Japan. Make your money online, go to school everyday, and keep your mouth shut.
