How to Prepare

Moving to another country, especially one as unique as Japan, can be exciting and daunting experience. There are many things to attend to before you get on the plane. This page provides a comprehensive, step-by-step, outline of everything you need to do before moving to Japan. Read it carefully, so you can begin your adventure with peace of mind. Pre-Move Check List

  • HOME

    • Terminate your lease or find someone to sublet your apartment.

    • Cancel your utilities: Internet, gas, water, trash, electricity.

  • PHONE

    • Some service providers (Google Fi) will let you text internationally. Do some research, but plan on getting a Japanese phone / service or a mobile hotspot.

  • JOB

    • Give your employer your updated mailing address.

  • CAR

    • Cancel insurance, register it non-op, and park it at a family member’s house. Or sell it.

  • STUFF

    • Put your belongings in storage, or a family member’s house.

    • Japan has four seasons. I suggest buying a waterproof backpack, and a rain jacket with “pit zips.”

    • TIP* Only bring one “checked” rolling bag with you to Japan. Navigating on public transportation can be difficult if you over pack.

  • PASSPORT

    • Make sure your passport won’t expire while you’re living in Japan.

  • MAIL

    • Forward your mail to a family member’s address, or consider setting up a mail-forwarding service.

    • Update address on Amazon and other websites.

  • HEALTH

    • You might visit the doctor or dentist before you leave. Also blood tests might be easier to get done before you leave.

    • Medications…might want to ask the language school about this.

  • MONEY

    • Contact your credit card company, and let them know you’re going to be living and making purchases in Japan.

    • Update your address at your credit card and bank.

    • Bring $1000 cash to Japan, and exchange it into Yen. You need cash in Japan.

  • BICYCLE

    • If you love riding your bike, you should bring it with you. The bicycles in Japan are expensive or garbage. Plan ahead.

  • DRIVING

    • Go to the AAA office and get a international driving permit, so you can at least rent a car in Japan.
