How to Send Mail

  • Domestic Letters: You will probably never need to “write” a letter in Japan, so don’t worry about it too much. Just ask your school to help you address the letter correctly. Bring the letter to a convenience store, buy a stamp, and then put the letter in a red mailbox.

How to Receive Mail

  • Domestic Packages: You can buy products from businesses in Japan, and Amazon-Japan. Remember, you need to be home when the package is getting delivered. Some businesses let you pay for the order (with cash) upon delivery.

  • International Packages: International shipping can be expensive, but some companies offer free shipping on large orders. Most products on Amazon-America can be shipped to Japan, but you’ll pay for shipping AND import taxes. You will get a import tax bill in the mail, and you can pay it at the convenience store. It’s not cheap…

The Secret Way…

If you live near a US military base (in Japan) there is a secret way to ship packages to America for cheaper. You need to befriend someone with base clearance. Give them the package, some cash, the address in America, and a list of the contents of the package. They will mail your package from the post office on the base. It will get to America in a week or two, and the shipping will be much lower. NOTE: Some products can be shipped to a US military P.O. box address, and there’s no import tax! Work out a deal with your friend.
