GENKI Japanese and Culture School Fukuoka was the very first location of the Genki family, opening its doors in August 2004. We specialize in communicative Japanese, and as our name suggests, our courses go beyond classroom learning. Students get to experience Japanese culture firsthand and interact with the local community, so they can learn real-life Japanese and actually use it in everyday situations. Our classes are small, just 8 students* at most. This means you’ll get plenty of practice in class and support tailored to your individual needs. Our campus has 11 classrooms, a friendly English-speaking student reception team, a lively student lounge where students can interact with each other and with Japanese people, and a library stocked with learning materials and manga to support your studies. In addition to being government-accredited, we are one of only 3 Japanese schools accredited by the International Association of Language Centers (IALC). We were also the first Japanese school to win the industry’s top award, the Star World Language School, and have proudly received it 4 times!

  • You may have heard of Tokyo or Kyoto, but many people still don’t know much about Fukuoka.
The truth is, Fukuoka is one of the best places in Japan to study Japanese. Fukuoka is the largest city in Kyushu with a population of about 1.6 million. It’s the region’s economic, cultural, and transportation hub, offering all the conveniences of a big city. At the same time, you can reach beaches, mountains, and parks in just 10–20 minutes from Tenjin or Hakata, something you won’t find in most major cities. Fukuoka is also famous as a “food capital.” Tonkotsu ramen, motsunabe, mentaiko, fresh seafood, this is a city loved by Japanese people for having some of the best food in the country. Fukuoka City has ranked No.1 for 4 consecutive years in nationwide “Most Livable City” rankings. With many universities and vocational schools, it’s a young and vibrant city where people in their 20s and 30s make up a large part of the population, an ideal environment for learners. The city is also designated as a National Strategic Special Zone for global startups, making it one of Japan’s top regions for entrepreneurship and innovation. Although Fukuoka isn’t as internationally famous as Tokyo or Kyoto, this actually creates a perfect language-learning environment: fewer people speak foreign languages, so you’ll be immersed in Japanese every day. It might feel challenging at first, but people in Fukuoka are known for being warm, friendly, and welcoming. Once you connect with the local community, you’ll understand why so many people fall in love with this city. Our Fukuoka school is located just a 5-minute walk from Hakata Station, the heart of the city. From Hakata, Fukuoka Airport is only 5 minutes away by subway, giving you incredibly easy access not only to all of Kyushu, but to anywhere in Japan. This combination of convenience and comfort is something truly unique among Japanese cities.

  • At our school, we have students from about 40 countries! Students from the U.S., Germany, the U.K., and France make up over half of our student body, and more than 90% of our students come from non-kanji-using backgrounds. Our students’ ages range widely, from teenagers to around 50. Everyone has their own reason for learning Japanese, but they all share one thing in common, a strong motivation to really study the language. Every day, they actively work toward their goals. After graduation, many students go back home and put what they’ve learned to use, but some take it further, they find jobs, continue their studies, or even start their own businesses here in Japan!

  • All of our Japanese teachers are certified, having either completed a 420-hour teacher training course at a recognized institution or passed the national teaching exam. They continue to receive training and have plenty of experience teaching foreigners. Our teachers come from a variety of backgrounds, and they use their unique experiences to create engaging and one-of-a-kind lessons that really draw students in. All of our student support staff can speak English and are super friendly. They’ll help you with anything and make sure your time studying in Japan goes smoothly. The feedback we hear most from students is about how great our teachers and staff are, it’s always the highlight for them!
